After watching A Class Divided I felt that this would be a great experiment for a teacher to do with their class. At a young age, such as third grade it is impossible for a child to know what discrimination feels like. Children believe comments they hear from family members or TV and bring those those judgements to school. Not living in a diverse area you can see how the stereotypes of black people developed and all the students strongly believed in them. A teacher can ask their students if they think its right for the way black people are treated and the student's can easily say yes or no but this kind of experiment brings their thoughts and feelings to a whole other level. It was amazing to watch the children who were not wearing a collar's become so superior and think they were so much better than the collard students. The day before the whole class was friendly and treated equal. It was intriguing how quickly the confidence of those wearing collar's disappeared. What amazed me, was how those who were friends started calling each other names and belittling the other ones. They didn't take into consideration the collared peoples feelings they were just happy it wasn't them.
This experiment shows how strongly a child's mood can effect their studies. I would love to do this experiment with my class. I think it would be a great experiment not only for discrimination but bullying as well. One never truly knows how someone is feeling until they experience it for themselves. Unfortunately those who are being picked on, others don't stand up for because they are just happy its not them. This experiment allows children to see how easily discrimination can tare people apart. I was amazed that after all these years, as adults they still were able to remember the experiment and the pain they had felt that day. That truly shows how strong this experiment worked on them. At even such a young age these children felt weak and hopeless. I'm sure these student's who the experiment was done on do not discriminate or make stereotypes about anyone because they can relate to how it feels. This teacher, Jane Elliot did a wonderful job a teaching a life learned lesson to her class. She changed lives that day.
